(More customer reviews)I live in a strong-signal area (Los Angeles). My original mag-mount 24" spike antenna does nicely on UHF but poorly on VHF. I bought this Apex because it had VHF capability and hoped that the amplifier would generally improve reception. I now receive satisfactory VHF. Otherwise I haven't noticed anything dramatic. I haven't fussed over the reception and don't feel competent to say much more on that.
Another reason I bought this antenna was because of the smart antenna aspect. The picture suggests very strongly that this is not "smart" in the CEA-909 sense - and it is *not*. But the description seemed ambiguous and for $10 I thought it was worth checking it out. (I'm not sure anyone manufactures smart antennas now.)
There is a definite plus if your coupon-eligible converter box (CECB) happens to have a smart-antenna connector. This Apex will save on cable clutter. That's because amplifier power can be supplied from the CECB smart-antenna connector rather than the included 120V power supply.
