(More customer reviews)Some assembly required, but straightforward. It's a cheap way to get some DTV signals if like me, your television viewing is too minimal (or internet-centric) to bother with full-bore DTV services like Cable or FIOS.
As with old-school bunny-ears, placement matters, especially relative to metallic obstructions.
After some fiddling and re-scanning, in my Baltimore-Washington market, my HDTV system was able to detect more than 20 DTV stations, of which I was able to some image on about half, and a steadily clear signal on 4-6 channels. This is similar to the number of completely clear analog broadcast stations in my immediate market.
A major caveat-- there's no staticy-but-viewable analog-style tuning in the DTV world. If the signal is momentarily inadequate to be decoded fully, the image will skip or stutter (like a scratched DVD), and if it's persistently inadequate, there's nothing at all.
In reading reviews of other similar items like the RCA ANT1050 Digital Flat Passive Ultra Slim Profile Antenna with Enhanced Reception (Black), I speculate that most people's complaints are tied to that: expecting a cable-clear image and instead having to deal with broadcast stutters.
Also to address the likely causes of other complaints (eg, not understanding how RF antenna work), there's a fair amount of metal in most A/V components, so mounting this antenna in the back of your TV cabinet is a bad idea. Get it up high over your gear. And make sure to switch your TV from cable/satellite mode to broadcast mode.
While this is hardly a drop-in "Digital Cable" replacement for devoted TV watchers, for the price this antenna is hard to argue with. And it's a pleasing surprise to see free 1080 or 720p channels over the air!
