DIRECTV H24 HD Satellite Receiver Review

DIRECTV H24 HD Satellite Receiver
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I called DirecTV and was told that I am not buying this unit. All units are sent to dealers as a lease item. If I ever disconnect, I would still be required to box it up and ship it back. If I want to buy a receiver, it can only be done through DirecTV and it would cost $499. So please be aware you are NOT buying this item. Plus it would cost $6 extra per month (which I am okay with)and I would have to start a new two year agreement. For example, if you are at a year and a half, you would be stuck for another two years. So, cost of about $95 plus $6 a month for 24 months, total cost $239 and you don't even own the receiver and have to ship it back if you disconnect service.

I have used this TV card several months with Windows Vista and 7 x64 and have had no problem. No problems with Windows Media Centers. Just use the new driver from the ATI website instead of the one in the CD.

NEW VIP 722K Dual Tuner HD DVR Dish Network Review

NEW VIP 722K Dual Tuner HD DVR Dish Network
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The 722K, a dual satellite tuner model, is virtually identical to the 722 except for the following:
1. Noticeably better HD and SD picture quality than previous generation ViP's. (ViP 922 is also reported to have noticeable better PQ).
2. Different chip-set from previous generation ViP's are, among other things, supposed to make it easier to work with Sling functions and external devices yet to be released.
3. The optional MT2 OTA module allows for receiving and recording up to 2 ATSC OTA local broadcast channels at the same time in HD.
The interface of the 722K is exactly the same as the 722. Operationally, it is identical to previous ViP boxes. The most compelling reason to get a 722K and its greatest advantage is the capacity for it to record up to 4 HD channels at the same time.
First, the 722K does NOT come with an ATSC OTA (for your digital local broadcasts)demodulator installed--as is the case with previous ViP's, but those can only receive ONE ATSC OTA channel. For about $30, you can purchase the MT2 OTA demodulator directly from Dish Network (if you are having it installed, the installer can install the OTA demod), from an on-line Dish Network retailer (usually less expensive), or from your local Dish Network retailer in your neighborhood.
Since the 722K does not come with the MT2 pre-installed, you will need to install it yourself, but it is an extremely easy thing to do. Follow the directions that come with the MT2. All you have to do is unscrew a covering, then gently slip the MT2 module into place. DONE!
Now, you will need to connect the MT2 to an external antenna to receive your digital local broadcasters. While an indoor antenna may be used with mixed results, the best results are achieved by mounting your antenna outside. Only ONE cable is required to be input to the MT2, but that one cable will provide for 2 (TWO) ATSC OTA tuners. Please go to your 722K menu to scan for your OTA's. They will be displayed in yellow on the guide along with your other channels. A strength meter displays for each OTA accessed using the MT2. You may seamlessly access these channels for viewing or recording just like any of your other sat channels, and they are part of any search.
Now, you can record 2 satellite channels and 2 OTA channels all at the same time all in HD, giving you an effective 4 HD tuner DVR. This feature is extremely useful during prime time when the family wants to record favorite shows on local TV and on satellite without having to bump someone else's timer recording. If you subscribe to Dish Local channels services, you can record all 4 major networks (2 using the sat tuners and 2 using the OTA tuner) in Hi-Def all at the same time.
IMPORTANT: Don't cancel your Dish locals via satellite service just yet. While the MT2 and the 722K can record ATSC OTA channels without a subscription to Dish locals via sat, there will be NO program data displayed for your digital locals via the MT2: "Digital Service" is displayed instead with no other information or data. Without Dish local via sat subscription, you will have to set manual timers to record via the M2T. It is a pain, but some people do actually do this to save a few bucks. Yes, that stinks. However, If you want guide data for your digital ATSC OTA's via the MT2, you will need to subscribe to Dish locals via sat. However, the good news is that the locals via satellite subscription is nominal (about $6), and you can set timers from the guide just like any other channels.
I have recorded 4 HD channels at the same time many times and even had the 722K archive recordings to the external HDD, and I've never experienced any problems.
Some more noteworthy features of the 722k that have been carried over from previous ViP boxes:
* Archive to and playback from external HDD's. A one-time charge (about $35) to activate this feature for ALL ViP's on your account with this feature. External HDD's must have their own power supplies. 1TB HDD is supported. You may have an infinite number of external HDD's in your collection (at present only 1 HDD connected to the box at one time). For example, you can have a seperate HDD for movies, one for TV shows, one for little bobby's recordings, one for your favorite recordings, etc., and you can archive from one ViP, then connect that HDD to the ViP in another room and watch it using that second ViP.
* Large capacity internal HDD allowing for over 55 hours of HD programming.
* Picture-in-Picture feature in SINGLE mode (not available in DUAL Mode)
* 1 Hour buffer for each tuner
* Organize your recordings by Folders using the name of the program or create your own customized Folder titles (Mom's shows; Comedies; what ever you wish)
* Rename individual recordings (Change the name of those embarrassing titles or rename an incorrectly named recording because a channel changed it programming at the last moment due to sports or news events or plain stupidity).
* New, enhanced Dish OnLine services now organized by channel, content, rating, etc. Now much easier to find your movies or TV shows available on-line (presently on 722K's, but 722's will also receive this update, unknown if earlier models will get this enhancement).
The 722K really is the best DVR product out there (it would've been the 922 except Dish is still working the bugs on that one). I own a TiVo Series 3, and I do like it, but Dish ViP DVR's, overall, are better than TiVo. In fact, the 3 tuner model of the Moxi is better than even the new TiVo Premier. TiVo comes in at a solid #3 on my list of best DVR's. The 722K is my favorite DVR in the house.

Hauppauge 1213 WinTV-HVR-2250 PCI-E x1 Dual TV Tuner Review

Hauppauge 1213 WinTV-HVR-2250 PCI-E x1 Dual TV Tuner
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Wow, I really dont know if I should give this product a one star or five star. I'll settle for a three for the pain it caused me.
First, my system: Core 2 Duo 2.53GHz, 4GB DDR2RAM, 256MB ATI graphics card w/HDMI out, 640GB HDD, Vista Home Premium 32bit. I am located in the mountains of SoCal, where OTA doesnt quite work, and so ClearQAM from TimeWarner is my only option.
Let me start off by saying if you are looking for a dual-tuner for digital/analog viewing, this is one of your best choices. However, expect to spend a night or two of surfing forums, updating drivers, installing hotfixes, etc... The problem is that Vista Media Center (initially) doesnt recognize the ClearQAM tuner, only the analog tuners. How to fix this? Well, my 8 hours of pain can be your simple gain.
Disclaimer: you will be adding a value to Vista's registry if you follow this review, so anything you do is on you alone!
1) If you've been trying to get the tuner to work, wipe all the tuner's drivers off utilizing the utility on the CD (select total and the checkbox below it) and restart Vista.
2) Update Windows.
3) Install the HVR-2250 and the BETA drivers from Hauppauge's USA website.
4) Install TV Pack 2008 (search online for it)
5) Install PC Ready Play (from MS download site)
6) Install the 2 hotfixes (KB951585 and KB950754 from MS download site)
7) Update Windows. (there will be a cumulative update for TV pack)
8) Open the registry (run/regedit)
9) Navigate to: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\hcw89
10) Add a new Folder (key) and name it: Parameters
11) Add a new DWORD to that and name it: AllowQAM_PowerToy
12) Make that value for the new string: 1
13) *Repeat 10-12 for: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\hcwPrx89
14) Reboot Vista
15) You should be good to go. When in Media Center, the automated set-up might still tell you that it found two analog tuners, which you then select manual set-up and go through the steps. You should see a choice for ClearQAM!
*Notes: the hcwPrx89 folder did not exist in my registry, so I had to create the folder and then add the DWORD.
For $130, I would expect Hauppauge to have either better drivers or better support. Scouring the forums will result in similar fixes like I describe above. I guess something similar to this works for Windows 7.
Oh, the good: it works like it's supposed to (after forementioned).
Hope this helps and GOOD LUCK!

DirecTV HD DVR DWO2-10020 Satellite TV Receiver Review

DirecTV HD DVR DWO2-10020 Satellite TV Receiver
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
On a good HDTV monitor with an HDMI connection, the video from this receiver is just stunning.
There are several things you should know:
1 - '30 hour' refers to HDTV recording capacity. For normal, non-HDTV programming, you'll get much, much more than 30 hours.
2 - For some reason, DirecTV has not upgraded the software to Tivo Series 2. That means no folders grouping together saved programs, no support for the USB ports (no broadband connection, you MUST use a modem), no Home Media Option or video sharing.
3 - There's a bug in the digital audio output which causes digital audio to fail with some amplifiers. Fortunately, my amp was firmware-upgradeable to be more forgiving about the audio format. From what I've read, the receiver fails to send proper headers on the audio and sometimes (when you're changing channels, going forward or backward) this causes audio to cut out completely. I found that I needed to restart my amp to get audio back. DirecTV does not acknowledge this problem.
4 - Over time we've seen more little audio and video glitches than I've ever seen with any other model Tivo or DirecTV receiver. Nothing serious, but kind of annoying.
5 - There is very little HDTV programming available on DirecTV at the moment. Unless you live in LA or NY or you're rural enough to qualify to receive distant stations, you're unlikely to be allowed to get the LA or NY HDTV feeds of local channels. This is a government restriction, not DirecTV's fault. There's one PPV channel in HD format, and there are HD feeds of HBO and Showtime plus a few other things. Definitely check with DirecTV to see what you'll be able to receive before jumping on this.
6 - DirecTV is working on bringing out lot more HDTV programming, including local network stations, but the rumor is that in order to do this they're going to switch to a new compression format that this receiver won't support. It's too early to say whether they'll provide a graceful upgrade path or will stick you with a thousand dollar receiver/recorder that can't receive the bulk of their programming, but consider yourself warned.

Pinnacle Systems 8230-10020-71 PCTV HD Ultimate Stick Review

Pinnacle Systems 8230-10020-71 PCTV HD Ultimate Stick
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I've used this product for a few months now. I had read the reviews prior to purchasing it and thought that I would be able to figure out any problems I encountered. I was wrong.
Initially I tried to use the included software (the only way the remote will work). I got so frustrated with the slow, confusing and slow included software interface I found instructions for using this product with Windows Media Center.
With Windows Media Center I can watch and record TV using this product. However the words are not always synced to the video. Pinnacle says they know it is a problem and do not have plans to address it. Thus my recordings are awfully unsynced and almost unwatchable (up to 30 second delay for sound).
The video quality is poor for cable channels. Watching this on my expensive computer monitor next to my TV, I would much rather watch on the TV. The digital channels do come in clear, but they do not work well with Windows Media Center (not Pinnacle's problem).
I am not having issues because I have an old computer- I have a new computer with a recent Nvidia Graphics Card, 2GB RAM and a Duo Core Centrino Processor. My processor never exceeds 70% while watching video with this product and doing a few other things at the same time.
Summary:
Poor Quality, Horrible Software, Plagued with Problems, But Usually Works

TiVo AN0100 Wireless N Network Adapter (Gray) Review

TiVo AN0100 Wireless N Network Adapter (Gray)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This works a lot better than the prior USB version, I can now stream HD Netflix movies on my TiVo HD for example whereas before I had trouble doing that because the USB version wifi adapter was so slow!
This doesn't plug into the USB on your TiVo but rather the ethernet port. It also requires AC power as well.
My only complaint is that this is too expensive.
If you plan to watch streaming content such as Netflix with your TiVo, I would recommend this device. However, if you only need it for the standard TiVo updates and network connectivity, the much cheaper USB version really works just fine. Even for scheduled downloads the USB version works fine because it does that in the background so the speed doesn't matter in that case.

DISH Network ViP722 DVR - Digital TV tuner / satellite TV receiver / DVR Review

DISH Network ViP722 DVR - Digital TV tuner / satellite TV receiver / DVR
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Wow. I am really trying to like Dish Network. I recently switched from DirecTV after being a DirecTV subscriber since the mid 90's. When told it would take almost 6 weeks for a DirecTV service person to come out and replace my dish, I looked into Dish Network, liked what I saw and switched. They were able to have someone out the next day. The price was a lot less for more programming than I was getting from DirecTV. The HD content is wonderful. Their installation guy was hard working and professional and their customer service people were excellent. The only DVR they had was the VIP722. I had TIVO's with DirecTV. Long story short, My first VIP722 died after about 3 weeks. I went through the disconnect, reconnect routine a number of times. I tried plugging it directly into the wall instead of a surge protector or battery backup. Noting seemed to help. To Dish's credit, they were quick to replace it by 2nd day shipping the replacement. I've now had the replacement connected for almost a week and am now getting weird video/audio syncing issues, random reboots, freezes, fast forward stuttering followed by more freezes. In other words, annoying reliability/quality issues. I thought my first unit might have had a cooling issue so with this one, I made sure there was extra ventilation and placed a usb powered external fan on the back/left side to help pull heat out. Off topic but I purchased this along with another external fan for my Onkyo 806 to solve a heat issue with that. If you have an Onkyo unit that gets extremely hot, the fan did the trick. Back to the VIP722: If this one complete fails like the first, I'll give it a go with a third. If that fails, I'll have to cancel my Dish subscription and either go back to DirecTV or cable. Fios isn't available in my area unfortunately. The VIP isn't in the same league as Tivo in many respects, quality and reliability being just two. Regardless and in spite of a relatively non-intuitive interface and a lack of a 'it just works' TIVO record, I was willing to make the change. Boy do I miss my TIVO's. Dish really needs to work this out. Losing subscriptions over a loser of a DVR/receiver would be a shame because in every other respect, Dish is a great service.
UPDATE, 05/08/2009: I'm on my third 722 but this one works flawlessly. No video syncing issues, stuttering video, freezing or constant reboots. The only thing I did differently was to NOT connect this to the internet. This is wild speculation but I feel like the unreliability I experienced with the other two might have been related to software updates via the ethernet connection. Now that I have one that works reliably, I'd give it a 4 star review if Amazon's system allowed for a rating change. TIVO is still the benchmark but once you get used to the 722's interface, everything works well.

Toshiba RS-TX20 DVD Recorder with 120 GB TiVo Series2 Digital Video Recorder Review

Toshiba RS-TX20 DVD Recorder with 120 GB TiVo Series2 Digital Video Recorder
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is a pretty nice unit. 120GB hard drive, which means 32 to 141 hours of recording capacity depending on video quality. MPEG encoding artifacts become pretty apparent in motion scenes at medium quality (94 hrs) so I'm sticking with High for most recordings, which means 46 hrs storage on the hard drive. Of course the great positive here is that you can archive to DVD the stuff you want to keep. There's no editing of the material before you burn, but if you have a PC at home, you can always rip the DVD and probably edit more easily there. This unit, as well as the Pioneers, has a major advantage in that it comes with TiVo basic (3-day program guide, no "season pass", "wish lists" or home media features) so you don't have to pay TiVo the $13/mo subscription unless you really want that stuff.
A few nits:
* menus can seem pretty slow at times, as does the program guide
* does not display amount used/free on hard drive
* even "live tv" is displayed with "best" compression (i.e. not the native line-in signal)
* DVD burns are only at the same quality you originally recorded the show
* remote is too symmetrical; i've pointed it the wrong way 3 times already!
* $100 rebate requires perhaps 10-12 weeks of premium TiVo subscription
As for the HD complainers, come on. How many people are even receiving HD content, let alone recording it? Since the dawn of analog videotape, home recording options have always been inferior in quality to broadcast/prerecorded-content. I agree that if you have satellite HD, it's much more compelling to go with an integrated DVR/converter box that can save the programming in its native format. But most of us don't live in that world. We just want to time-shift our shows. I had been using a VCR up till now and this is much better. I don't doubt there will be better recorders in the future, but this is a nice combo IMHO.
BTW, I suggest doing a websearch/price-compare as you may not find your best deal here (hint hint).

Toshiba's RS-TX20 Digital Media Server is two high-tech components in one: a full-featured DVD recorder/player and a TiVo Series2 digital video recorder with free TiVo Basic service included with purchase. The unit's high-capacity, 120 GB hard-disk drive (HDD) stores up to 140 hours of audio/video storage (depending on the quality level you select), while DVD recording gives you the option for archiving your VHS and camcorder footage and for easy recording of your favorite TV programs. A convenient, front-panel DV input (IEEE 1394) is perfect for quick transfers of camcorder material onto the hard-disk drive and then to DVD.The unit also comes with a 45-day free trial of the TiVo Plus service so you can try features unique to the TiVo Plus service, including the ability to search for programs by title, set up Season Pass recordings for your favorite shows, and create actor, director, and keyword WishLists searches. With TiVo Basic Service included and without paying a subscription fee, you can record your favorite TV shows onto the HDD and watch them on your schedule. You can also record content from the hard disk drive to a DVD media (DVD-R or DVD-RW--does not record to DVD-RAM discs) quickly and easily. The easy-to-use TiVo interface can automatically create a DVD menu for easy navigation. DVDs can be named according to your program selections, or you may manually enter a title. This is a great DVD player, too. Whether your living room is currently home to an HDTV or you're merely thinking of "someday," the RS-TX20 will deliver the full potential of your commercial DVDs. Progressive scanning, referred to as 480p for the number of horizontal lines that compose the video image, gives you higher resolution and sharper images than standard 480i signals while eliminating nearly all motion artifacts. Toshiba's Digital Cinema Progressive feature (3:2 pulldown detection and reversal) digitally corrects frame distortion in film-based material to display a film-frame-accurate picture. The recorder/player offers 1 set of ColorStream Pro component-video outputs (selectable for 480p/480i), 2 composite-video-based AV inputs, 1 S-video input, and 1 RF coaxial input (for an antenna signal or a feed from an older VCR or cable box). A set of left/right analog-audio outputs channel audio to Dolby Pro Logic receivers and stereo televisions, while both Dolby Digital and DTS 5.1-channel surround-sound signals can be routed through the player's Toslink optical digital-audio output for direct connection to a full-featured audio/video receiver. The DVD drive is fully compatible with your MP3 and WMA music CDs and will even play discs full of your favorite JPEG digital photos for ready-made slide shows right in your living room.A supplied IR blaster cable for cable-box and satellite receiver control (C3 Control) connects to the back of the recorder and transmits an infrared (IR) signal to change channels on your cable or satellite box, as needed, for advance recording--freeing you from having to pretune the correct channel ahead of time. The included, no-fee TiVo Basic service features a 3-day rolling program guide, TV "Trick Play" features (such as the ability to pause and rewind live TV), instant replay/instant skip, and manual recording capability with repeat function. The unit is fully upgradeable to the TiVo Plus Service (subscription required: $12.95 per month or a "product lifetime" fee of $299 that's good for as long as your RS-TX20 remains operational), which includes TiVo's Home Media Option for remote (online) scheduling, access to MP3/JPEG digital media files from your PC, and multi-room viewing with no additional TiVo receivers. What's in the Box DVD/HDD recorder/player, a remote control, remote batteries, an IR blaster cable, a user's manual, a stereo analog audio interconnect/composite-video cable, and warranty/registration information.

TiVo TCD648250B Series3 HD Digital Media Recorder Review

TiVo TCD648250B Series3 HD Digital Media Recorder
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I've recently upgraded from the original TiVo to the new "Series3" HD TiVo. This review was written with the new Series3 out for less than one month, so some of the shortcomings listed below may have been addressed by the time you read this.
TiVo did a spectacular job with the hardware. The recorder can hold ~35 hours of HDTV or ~300 hours of non-HD programming, which is significantly more than cable company-provided DVRs. The Series3 can record two shows at once -- either OTA (connect an antenna to receive the networks) or cable via CableCards, and if you have a recent HDTV, the TiVo can output all the recording via HDMI (a pure digital connection between the TiVo and your HDTV). It also contains a host of less major upgrades (back lit remote, an OLED display, etc) that improve upon the famous TiVo experience.
I should point out that, at the time of writing, the Series3 is missing functionality that is available on older TiVos, such as ability to export shows to your PC, iPod, etc (TivoToGo), and the ability to view shows recorded on the Series3 on other TiVos in your house (Multi-room viewing). If these are important to you, you may want to delay your purchase until this functionality is added (currently, there is no guarantee they will be available). I rated the item as "4 stars" because of the missing functionality.
If you plan on viewing only OTA (ABC, CBS, NBC, FOX, etc via an antenna) programming, you can stop reading this review, since the rest of it deals with using TiVo with cable company supplied CableCards.
Most people who purchase a TiVo Series3 do so with the intention of using it with their cable service, and the only way to receive digital (non-basic) cable service on the Series3 is with the use of cable company-supplied CableCards. Unlike older TiVos, a cable box cannot be connected to the Series3. If you plan on using a Series3 with cable, be aware that getting and installing CableCards *can* be very difficult, and you may wish to check with your cable provider prior to purchasing the Series3. Some caveats, based on my experience with the second largest cable provider:
(1) The customer service agents flatly refused to provide CableCards for use in a TiVo. It required multiple calls and escalations to finally have a manager "approve" the install. You should note that cable companies are *required*, by law, to provide CableCards for compatible devices. Most cable companies charge a monthly fee (usually less than $2) for each CableCard.
(2) Some cable companies require a technician to "install" the cards on premises, which may cost you $35 - $45 for the install (again, check with your cable co). Unfortunately for me, the installer couldn't activate the cards. This also appears to be a frequent issue at the time of writing. Multiple calls later, I finally found a customer service agent who was able to activate both cards.
(3) With CableCards, you cannot receive OnDemand and Pay Per View events. You should also note that some cable companies are placing channels on "Switched Digital Video" (SDV). SDV channels are not compatible with the Series3, so check with your cable provider.
(4) Finally, if you subscribe to a cable package such a digital cable + broadband Internet, you cable price may not go down if you return your set-top box. In my case, the price would actually have *increased* since, without the cable box, since I would not be eligible for the package pricing. Needless to say, I kept the cable box.
Overall, I am satisfied with my Series3. The initial installation problems caused a couple of headaches, but once resolved, it has performed quite well. Some of cable company problem might become less frustrating once the cable co gains more experience with this product.

EyeTV Hybrid - Mac TV tuner stick that receives free over-the-air (OTA) HDTV, Clear QAM & analog TV (10020630) Review

EyeTV Hybrid - Mac TV tuner stick that receives free over-the-air (OTA) HDTV, Clear QAM and analog TV (10020630)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
My MacBook Pro, combined with the EyeTV Hybrid and an over-the-air HDTV antenna, has been my first introduction into the beautiful quality of broadcast HDTV. While the USB stick is a little big and clunky looking hanging off the side of the laptop, the picture and DVR functionality it delivers has been top-notch! I'm certainly buying another one for the new desktop Mac I'm picking up.
I've had this product since version 2 of the software, and El Gato has been great about issuing software updates, bug fixes and interface improvements in the 6+ months I've owned it. Version 3 of the software is very polished and functioning well. Upgrades for software have so far been free and delivered in just a minute or two over my broadband Internet connection. The EyeTV software always checks for any new versions that might be out and notifies you on-screen that a new version is available.
The only thing I don't enjoy about the product is the remote control. It's a bit cheap looking and has some bad ergonomics in regards to controlling the software. Plus it does not take advantage of the Mac's own built-in infra-red remote receiver, but instead uses one on the USB stick. That can make for some awkward aiming to get the stick to see the remote's commands.
Other than that, I'd recommend this product to any Mac user wanting an HDTV connection. I'd imagine this would be a great space-saving device for kids in dorms too! Eliminate space taken by a TV. Your Mac will make an excellent HDTV and DVR with this inexpensive device!ADDENDUM: 2/13/2010
As pointed out by another customer, EyeTV software _now_ is able to use the Apple Remote directly with the built-in infra red receiver on new Mac's with the latest updates to the soft ware. Thanks, El Gato! And it functions really well while watching recorded material. I have not tried it with menu navigation, etc., in the tuner section of the software. I loved this product so much that I did end up picking up another one. But this time I bought the more expensive EyeTV 250 Plus for use on a 24" iMac. The 250 Plus basically adds a small box with analog video inputs and its own processor for converting analog videos to digital. I have some old videotapes and LaserDiscs that I plan on archiving this way. You can also do this with the EyeTV Hybrid, but it uses the Mac's own CPU for most of the processing muscle. Depending on how you use your Mac, the 250 Plus could free up your Mac to do other things while converting video.Elgato EyeTV 250 Plus Digital/Analog TV Receiver and Video Converter

Philips DVDR3505/37 1080i Upscaling DVD Recorder with Built-In Tuner Review

Philips DVDR3505/37 1080i Upscaling DVD Recorder with Built-In Tuner
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The Phillips DVDR3505/37 has the best "digital tuner" picture quality out of the two other DVD recorders that I have tested with "digital tuners" (Panasonic and Samsung). The Phillips DVDR3505 produces an amazingly clear OTA digital picture on my old 27 inch Sanyo analog "box" TV using an indoor antenna. The Phillips 3505 and the 27inch TV are connected with regular "composite cables". The resulting OTA digital picture is amazingly detailed and clear with little or no annoying "dot crawl". Another important feature for me in selecting the Phillips DVDR3505 is that it allows you to choose "4.3 pan & Scan" to view OTA digital programs in full screen on a "box" TV (no black bars caused by "HD" OTA programs). In the 4.3 pan & scan mode the OTA digital picture is shown in full screen but is not distorted looking (no long and stretched faces) and the picture framing matches the full screen picture seen on my analog OTA TV in a side by side comparison. In addition the picture clarity/sharpness in the "4.3 pan & scan" full screen mode is superb! The same effect should be achieved when watching a purchased or rented "widescreen" DVD movie on your "Box" TV in the 4.3 pan & scan mode. The cons for the Phillips DVDR3505 are its slow channel change and slow recording set up. One additional problem I have experienced is that the unit looses its channel set up under certian conditions. At this point in my life, the quality of the picture that you see from your cable, Sat, or OTA programs is what is most important to me and my family when watching TV. The truth is that I have put up with poor reception using analog TV with "rabbit ears" antennas long enough, so the amazing picture quality of the Phillips is what sold me. The Phillips DVDR3502 wins hand down in that category and is the main reason that I sent the other more expensive feature rich DVD recorders back to the store. My family and I have been able to work around or forgive all of the "cons" reported about for the Phillips DVDR3505 and because we are basic users the Phillips meets our needs for recording OTA TV programs while providing a "Wow factor" in picture clarity when watching "real time" OTA digital TV through our analog "box" TV. Also, a "Wow factor" is achieved even when watching OTA digital program recorded on DVD using the Phillips DVDR3505. Image reproduction is excellent in two highest image recording modes. Before buying see if the features on the Phillips DVDR3505/37 matches your basic needs. If viewing pleasure has been lacking for OTA broadcasts then get ready to receive the "Best Picture" award from friends and family when using the Phillips DVDR3505.

ATSC NTSC Hybrid HDTV PCI TV Tuner /Digital Video Recorder Review

Hi, this package is great. I've used TV tuner cards for several years and seen them develop. This card is by far more mature than anything I've used. It's very easy to use, the interface is like a TIVO and the functions are fairly intuitive. Overall, I give it high marks and am satisfied with my purchase.

TiVo TCD652160 HD Digital Video Recorder Review

TiVo TCD652160 HD Digital Video Recorder
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
First, I need to inform you that all of my home television programming comes from an antenna on my roof. No cable or satellite whatsoever.
When the Series 3 debuted earlier this year, I contacted TiVo about recording two HD channels at the same time from an antenna and was told that would not occur. That one would be in HD and the other in standard definition. That, along with the price made me pass on this unit.
When the TiVo HD came along, I contacted TiVo again and was told by one technician that it WOULD record two HD shows and by another that it would not. With the cheaper price, I decided to give it a try and am glad that I did so.
I am happy to report that this unit will definitely record two high definition programs at the same time from an antenna. No splitters, amplifiers or other hardware. Just plug it into the Antenna connector on back of the box.
Setup and activation was easy. The most difficult part was figuring out the maze of cables behind my TV and Stereo amplifier, but that is hardly TiVo's fault. I already had it set up when I called to activate the box. When I got off the phone and turned it on, it was ready to download the Guide. Very hassle free.
The remote, while nothing fancy, has a good layout of buttons and is programmable so that it will turn my TV on and allow me to change its inputs while the volume and mute buttons control my amplifier. About the only other thing I need for it to do is actually turn the stereo on. But getting up once to turn on the stereo is a small price to pay for being able to record HD programs and pause live TV.
On some forums users have been reporting macro-blocking and pixelation when using some cable cards. I have no experience with that, but can report that I have not seen this problem using an antenna. In fact, I see no difference at all in the quality of the broadcast than I did when the signal went directly to my television.
After a bit over a week's use I have no complaints at all with the product or service and would recommend it to others.

ATI TV Wonder HD 650 Combo USB PC TV Tuner Review

ATI TV Wonder HD 650 Combo USB PC TV Tuner
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I first bought the ATI TV Wonder HD 650 PCIE card to go in my computer (a Gateway SX2800), but discovered that the card is about 1/8" too long to fit (runs into the DVD drive). So I returned the card and picked up the external USB version instead. I went with the HD 650 because it offered dual tuning and was on great sale at the local big box retailer ($30 PCIE and $40 USB).
I'm running Windows 7 and wanted a dual TV tuner to use with Media Center. I currently have standard definition cable running into the analog input (very basic cable, no fancy channels). I hope to get a digital antenna soon to test out the digital input, and if that works okay then I'll replace the analog TV with an FM radio antenna or leave the analog cable to allow recording of one channel and watching another.
So when I first got the unit, I plugged it straight in and let Windows deal with it. It appeared to recognize it and load drivers okay. Then I went to set it up in Media Center. That went okay, too, and it didn't indicate any problems. BUT then when I tried to watch TV all I got was a black screen. I discovered that I could unplug the unit and plug it back in and it would work perfectly fine. Fine, that is, until I exited MC. Launching MC again brought it back in the unusable state. Unplugging always fixed it though. There was also a scary incident where the computer blue screened and crashed, then couldn't find the hard drive to boot from. Not sure it was related the tv tuner or not, but after unplugging the SATA cables and re-seating them on the motherboard it was able to boot again.
Having to unplug it every time I wanted to watch TV wasn't acceptable, and I was afraid I would have to return it. I decided to try upgrading the drivers first. I downloaded the latest driver from the ATI website and ran the .exe file. Turns out that is not enough. You have to go into the device manager and manually update the driver by pointing it to the appropriate folder. Once I did that, VOILA it seems to be working as expected now! The picture looks really good (at least as good as it did on the TV's tuner) and all the TIVO-esque functionality is there (which is great!).
So getting it working was a bit of a pain and a little bit scary, but so far so good. Now to test out the digital tuner...
