I ditched cable in February 2008. Until six months ago, I relied on a Radio Shack brand antenna with built in signal amplifier that cost me about $50. It was acceptable. It generally got a good signal, though it would cut out pretty easily during a storm. We moved to a new place and we would occasionally lose channels with no rhyme or reason.
Full disclosure -- my uncle invented the Wall-Tenna and offered me one of the first off the line. I installed it in our attic and ran it through a splitter to both the living room and bedroom. I never even bothered to try splitting my store-bought antenna's signal as I knew it was too weak (it needed an amplifier just to get a signal to one tv). The Wall-Tenna's signal, even when split, was stronger than my store-bought antenna had ever been (according to the signal meter on my tv). Additionally, I now receive 3-4 local channels that my store-bought antenna never picked up. No more problems with inexplicable picture drops outs.
I seriously can't recommend this product enough. If you've already dropped cable and are considering a new antenna, this is a low-cost, high-quality product. If you're still paying $100 a month for cable, but considering an antenna, trust me, just do it. A quality antenna coupled with a Roku, or similar device to let you get HuluPlus or NetFlix streaming, is more than enough and much, much cheaper.
