Indoor Amplified Uhf/vhf/fm/hd Review

Indoor Amplified Uhf/vhf/fm/hd
Average Reviews:

OK, so I live in an apartment building with an antenna on the roof and wired jacks connecting to this antenna in each apartment.
Originally I using the basic local package from the cable company and decided I didn't watch enough Live tv to continue paying for the package. So now I only receive internet service through the cable company.
Then when over the air broadcasts switched to digital i connected to the digital antenna on the roof and was able to get over 40 channels free. then this last summer the antenna on the roof has been very unreliable. I'd lose signal completely or it would pixelate really bad. I bought this antenna yesterday from walmart, for $27 and it works like a charm. I positioned it against the window and get anywhere from 50% to 100% signal and I get 42 channels. I have two flat screen tvs with digital ATSC tuners built in.
So I seem to get one more channel with this antenna then I did with the roof.
As far as the two reviews that say they had trouble with reception:
As always with any antenna, geographic location, building materials, antenna placement strength of signal all play a part in how well reception will be received.
Also I know people with analog tube TVs that have a digital box. Personally I have read up on those boxes and they aren't are reliable as a new digital TV. In fact, most of the boxes i could find reviews on only had 1 or 2 stars. Most report the boxes having a short life, or inconsistent ability to hold, or even tune into a signal.P.S. I live in central florida which is flat. And my apartment is in a high rise, so i'm sure both factors help reception for me.One Last thing, I have gain turned up on max and i get great signal results. I have two tvs one in the living room and one in the bedroom, the antenna is shared between them with a splitter. People would assume one tv might not work as well due to signal loss, but on the contrary, both tvs are great with very crisp signals.

Philips SDV2710/27 Passive Enhanced Digital Performance Antenna Review

Philips SDV2710/27 Passive Enhanced Digital Performance Antenna
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I've gone through a mess of indoor antennas, including some amplified models that cost as much as $100, this was the best of the breed (including the famous "silver sensor.") With it's rabbit ears it can do VHF, which many "hi def" antennas don't do.
In my experience, with digital TV, amplification is only for when you have long cable runs (if you install antenna in attic) or if you have splitters which weaken signal. If you don't get a good digital signal it doesn't matter whether you amplify it or not...it will still break up.
During the digital transition, most stations transmitted their digital on UHF. However, now some are switching back to VHF, as is the case in our area with WJBK. Make sure you get an antenna that supports both UHF and VHF if needed.
Step one, when buying and setting up any antenna is to check for your stations @ antennaweb dot org and tvfool dot com. Antennas are directional. Use the websites to determine where your towers are and face the antenna appropriately (unfolded flat side facing towers.) There is actually an ideal tuned antenna length for VHF. For my area the rabbit ears work best about 1/3rd extended and facing 180 degrees apart.
We pick up all the stations rated Yellow on antennaweb with this antenna. This was the only antenna I tested that did this consistently. Others were too directional so they had to be turned back and forth or they broke up on some stations and still others didn't pick up VHF at all.
The only negative I have for this antenna is that it does not sit up when unfolded flat. We had to support it against a wall in one case, and a cabinet, in another.

Magnavox 32MF231D 32-Inch Widescreen LCD TV Review

Magnavox 32MF231D 32-Inch Widescreen LCD TV
Average Reviews:

I am the first one to admit that I love my toys, and while I have mellowed in my old age, I have owned a lot of audio and visual equipment over the years. I was really excited to be getting my first flat screen TV, and figured a product from Phillips Magnavox would be a good one. Well, I was wrong. Let me begin by saying that this TV is only four and a half months old! Major technical issues have arisen in which the TV makes horrible noises and shuts itself off. I looked around online and found lots of other people have had the same problem as well. Then you have to call their technical support, which is just a great way to kill some time before they come back and tell you to take it to a local service center, and that labor is coming out of your pocket. They will however let you know "how sorry they are to hear that," about 7 or 8 times. Not a great product, poor service, not super cheap either. Try another brand, especially if you are going to spend this kind of money.

Enjoy the crystal clear imagery of high-definition television with the stylish, silver 32-inch Magnavox 32MF231D HDTV, which provides a wide array of connectivity options for all your video needs. It has a built-in ATSC tuner that pulls HD signals right from the airwaves (via an optional antenna), and its QAM tuner is fully compatible with unscrambled HDTV cable reception. You can also hook up an HDMI-capable cable or satellite set-top box and enjoy the the highest standard of high-definition audio and video--with a single cord connection. A standard analog NTSC tuner receives standard-definition (SD) programming. It comes with a removable tabletop stand, and this set can be wall-mounted with optional hardware.
The 32MF231D delivers a true 1366 x 768-pixel HDTV resolution (capable of displaying 1080i and 720p high-definition signals), and it features a wide 170-degree viewing angle, 500 cd/m2 (candela per square meter) brightness rating--perfect for viewing colorful details in even direct sunlight--and high 800:1 contrast ratio. (The higher the contrast ratio, the greater a TV's ability to display subtle color details and not get washed out by ambient room light.) It also offers a very fast 8ms (millisecond) response time, which is great for watching fast-moving. sports and action movies.
The 3D motion adaptive de-interlacing feature cleans up noise that can occur in digital video streams, so the image is crisper, without jagged edges. The 3D comb filter further enhances resolution by removing blurred edges between colors and reducing dot crawl (tiny, moving dots of color along a sharp color separation in a vertical line, as in a depiction of a character's striped T-shirt). Convenience features include the Smart Picture function, which allows you to choose among settings for optimal picture color, and V-Chip parental controls.
Experience great stereo sound from built-in 10-watt speakers (with a total power output of 20 watts). Magnavox's Smart Sound feature automatically prevents the jumps in volume between programs and commercials and provides a steady volume level. It offers the following connection options:
Composite AV (RCA): 4 in
S-Video: 2 in
Component Video: 2 in
HDMI: 1 in
RF: 1 in

Tech Talk HDMI is a lossless, uncompressed, all-digital audio/video interface to link any audio/video source (such as a set-top box, DVD player, or AV receiver) with your TV--all over a single cable. HDMI supports standard, enhanced or high definition video, plus multi-channel digital audio on a single cable. It supports all ATSC formats--standard (SDTV), enhanced (EDTV), and high (HDTV).
Component video (also called Y/Pb/Pr) features a three-jack video input, which provides separate connections for luminance (Y), blue color difference (PB) and red color difference (PR). This results in increased bandwidth for color information, resulting in a more accurate picture with clearer color reproduction and less bleeding than you would get with S-Video or composite (RCA yellow video plug) connections. You will need a separate RCA left/right audio cable for sound.

Amazing, the Philips SDV2750/27 is a superb antenna for only $5 more than this one. I always wondered, why a company that can make a great product still bother to make a garbage for few dollars less? If someone knows the answer, please enlighten me.

Magnavox M61415 Automatic Outdoor Antenna Rotator Review

Magnavox M61415 Automatic Outdoor Antenna Rotator
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This antenna rotator is of very poor quality. I needed two, and one was DOA because it wouldn't rotate past a quarter of a circle. The second was better, but it also seems to leave out the last 10 or 15 degrees of rotation. After swinging the antenna a few times I don't know where it's actually aimed, but I do know it's not aimed where the controller says it is. I also have used the radio shack rotator and, while it's more money, it hasn't failed in 5 years of operation.

Magnavox 20MF500T 20-Inch LCD TV Review

Magnavox 20MF500T 20-Inch LCD TV
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I just bought this item yesterday...I am about to return it today. Basically, the main purpose I had in mind for this TV was simply to watch SD content (older movies, TV, games, etc.) - what else!? that's basically all this thing is capable of according to the specs. So far so good. After much 'research' and thinking and consulting, I decided to go with this TV, but also because of what it seemed to be capable of when I saw it on display at Target.
Well, I probably should have known better, but I was about to get what was coming to me from this LCD - VERY poor SD quality! In short, if you're looking for a nice LCD TV to watch your good ole' standard movies and games on, this is NOT the TV for you! The 'confusing' part of this whole thing is, what in the WORLD is the point of this TV!?!?!? It's pretty much common knowledge that SD content looks considerably better on tube TVs and pretty crummy on LCDs and other of the newer technologies. So, that in mind, this TV, having only the capability to display SD content (given its resolution of 640x480), is basically worthless (unless you like a super-soft, undefined image) in all areas except for, perhaps, component-video-related material (more or less DVDs). I guess if that's all you're looking for, is to watch DVDs and you have component outputs on your player, this TV may not be so bad (the picture is quite sharp from what I saw), but you're not getting high definition from it and therefore, it is essentially geared toward (or should be geared toward) standard TV watching.
However, I don't necessarily 'blame' the TV itself. As far as it's capabilities, I suppose I wasn't completely dissatisfied with its performance - even though I got turned off immediately after seeing it display SD content like an old Atari game. The colors and image itself is not 'bad' in any real sense. However, a big criticism I have of this set is its LACK of features. VERY VERY plain set over all (including the remote). There's really only so much you can do with this TV - and that includes watching DVDs, VHS (and whatever else you can hook up with component or audio connections) tv-watching to some extent (cable, and OTA broadcasting - and oh, don't forget it does NOT have a digital ATSC tuner for digital television - another prohibiting factor) and using it as a computer monitor...but who would do ANY of that, considering you're essentially using the WRONG technology for the stuff you wanna watch? Ok, I did it. But I learned a valuable lesson about the new technologies that are out there, and I hope to save others the trouble of learning this lesson the hard way. What I've learned is the following (and this addresses a major issue concerning modern TVs): you wanna watch SD, stick with the (better quality) tubes; you want HD - go with the new. It's that simple.
Well, sorry for the lecture, but I had to give the whole story on this. To summarize, be careful WHAT you use this TV for! I am "not sure" and rather disappointed about this TV for actually mainly one reason...the PRICE!!! For this price, the TV should do A LOT more than what it is capable of! Bottom line. If it were about $150 less, I might consider it for its very minimal benefits.

Philips SDV2750/27 Amplified Superior Digital Design Antenna Review

Philips SDV2750/27 Amplified Superior Digital Design Antenna
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I purchased this antenna at Walmart because of its small foot print and low price. I had previously used a Winegard ss-3000, which is probably the best indoor HDTV antenna around, but it measures 27 inches across. The Phillips antenna does OK with analog signals, but does require careful use of the gain and amplifier to receive digital signals. In fact, I had to use the low amplifier settings and near the lowest gain on the UHF signals (HDTV) to recieve all of my local channels that were digital signals. Also, I found moving the UHF head to a horizontal position, not the verticle position shown in the product photographs, gave the strongest signals. You may also want to retract and push down the rabbit ears when watch HDTV, as they seem to lessen reception. If you TV has a digital strength meter, that is a big help in the fine tuning the Phillips antenna. The Winegard and this antenna are both directional, so you must direct it at the transmission source for best reception.

Philips Sdw1850/17 Antenna Remote-Controlled Rotor Review

Philips Sdw1850/17 Antenna Remote-Controlled Rotor
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
If there was ever was a good example of why you should always read the instructions, this rotator is it. According to the instructions, the rotator must be synchronized and it is recommend this step be performed on the ground prior to installation. If you are going to buy this rotator, make sure you do this step. The motor in my rotator died during this step. I got maybe 6 or so rotations before it died. I'm so grateful that it died on the ground, before I had spent considerable time on the roof mounting the rotator and antenna and permanently wiring everything.
Other reasons to reconsider purchasing this model:
1) The contol box showed the antenna position moving even though the motor had burned out. This indicates that there is actually no reliable feedback from the rotator to the control unit, essentially making the antenna position indicated by the control unit meaningless.
2) I expected to see a larger motor. The motor size may in fact be adequately sized but to me, it does look a little "toyish." For those that remember "LPs", let me just say that most turntables had motors that looked more substanstial than the one in this unit.
3) The universal remote control that comes with this unit is a primitive TV/VCR only. I don't why Philips didn't change the remote with this product to a TV/DVD remote years ago when DVD players pretty much killed the VCR. Once the digital transition occurs, this remote will be pretty much useless with TVs because you won't be able to punch in digital channels.
Philips generally puts out solid 3.5 star products - this doesn't appear to be one of them.

I was quite dissappointed in this antenna. I purchased the same antenna about 1.5 years ago and got this one for my second television because I have a digital television and prefer to not have cable. This antenna was labeled to be the same as my original but it is not. The cables were different and caused it to not work on my television. Overall it was just more cheaply made. I called Phillips directly and they told me to just return it. Amazon was great about accepting the refund. Not so happy with Phillips.

Philips MANT940 UHF Digital and Analog Indoor/Outdoor Antenna Review

Philips MANT940 UHF Digital and Analog Indoor/Outdoor Antenna
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I have tried five or six compact antennas that can be used indoors, as I live in an apartment. The best performing of those models (a very basic UNpowered Philips model)could get four of the six strong stations in my town, and none of the four or five weaker stations. And, getting those stations required moving the "rabbit ears" back and forth whenever the signal went out.
This model was designed for OUTDOOR use, but I simply placed it on a window sill that faces in the direction of the six major stations in my community. After moving it left and right a few inches, I found a location on the window sill that locked in an absolutely perfect signal on all six of the strong stations and on two weak stations I had never been able to get before.
How good is the resulting picture? It is the sharpest, clearest picture I've ever seen on any TV, far sharper than the picture provided by cable television service. Because each channel offers multiple "sub-channels" (two, three or four programs per channel), the eight stations I am getting are showing a total of about sixteen programs at any given time.
So, for $50, I get a choice of sixteen programs with an ultra-clear digital picture without having to pay one dime to the cable company. People who have never seen a TV program from an "over the air" digital signal are always shocked by the quality of the picture...just amazingly sharp with zero ghosting or noise.
The included cable is short, but it works well, as my TV is just six feet from the window where the antenna is placed. To use the antenna mounted outdoors on a wall, as the directions suggest, would require buying an additional length of cable.
To use just ONE antenna with multiple televisions would require using a splitter and running cables from that splitter to each TV, which might weaken the quality of the signal.
I'm guessing that putting the antenna outdoors, high on an outside wall facing the broadcasting towers might bring in a few more of the weaker stations.

Magnavox MANT-110 Indoor Passive Antenna Review

Magnavox MANT-110 Indoor Passive Antenna

I just bought a [very] nice 40" Samsung LCD HDTV and haven't coughed up the extra money to upgrade my DirecTV to the HD box, so I read up online about over the air HD antennas and thought I'd give it a try. I figured I'd start with the cheapest antenna I could find and if it didn't work I'd get the next one up.
Well I just bought this Philips Indoor Antenna for $9.99 plugged it in (quick and simple), set it behind the TV and bang got perfect HD reception for my local ABC, FOX, CBS, several PBSs. I realized I didn't get NBC so I moved the arms a little bit and set it on the other side of tv and boom... got NBC HD as well. I was amazed... I sort of just sat back in awe for moment at the clarity. I never knew TV could look so good.
I HIGHLY recommend trying this antenna before spending $40-$100 on some other one that probably won't work as well.

Philips SDV2210/17 UHF/VHF/FM/HDTV Indoor Antenna Review

Philips SDV2210/17 UHF/VHF/FM/HDTV Indoor Antenna
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I will preface my remarks with something that probably does not need to be said. Indoor antennas perform differently in various locations, so my experience may mirror yours or not. Having said that, I feel I have earned the right to comment and the obligation to share my experience in attempting to find the best antenna.
General background: I have a 37" Toshiba LCD TV and I live on the 7th floor of a high rise apartment building in downtown Nashville. Nashville is in a basin surrounded by hills with TV towers in several locations in the metro area. I do not live far from any of them, probably less than 15 miles from the farthest. However, I do live in the middle of skyscrapers ... and of course those Middle Tennessee hills.
I recently decided that I couldn't totally trust Comcast to deliver programming since on the night of the final presidential debate of 2008 they, for reasons that are still not totally clear to me, decided to disconnect my service to connect someone else in the building. I'm sure it was all just a mistake; but during the last ten years, it has happened a couple of other times, so let's just say I was not happy that evening. I was forced to drink a six pack of Miller Lite in a bar a few blocks away with people that I am sure have many virtues but did not share my political opinions. BUT a guy has to do what he has to do to watch history in the making.
Comcast had my service restored early the next morning; but I had already decided to get an antenna for the next time one of their installers made a mistake. I ordered the following antennas from Amazon over a period of several days. (I hope my friends like my rejects as Christmas presents ... just kidding.)
1) Philips PHDTV1 Silver Sensor UHF/HDTV Digital Indoor TV Antenna
2) GE 24775 Quantum Indoor HDTV Antenna
3) Terk HDTVa Indoor Amplified High-Definition Antenna
4) Philips High Performance Amplified Indoor Uhf/Vhf/Fm/HDTV Antenna
5) Philips SDV2210/17 UHF/VHF/FM/HDTV Indoor Antenna
Here are my results:
1) The Phillips PHDTV1 Silver Sensor was not the antenna I needed; but that's my fault. It's a purely UHF antenna; and four of the stations I must have are VHF stations: ABC, NBC, CBS & PBS. It works fine for the others; but obviously I should not have ordered this one.
2) The GE 24775 Quantum worked well actually. I would have settled on this one because it picked up all stations well (except the ABC station sometimes). However, it requires electricity and has the brightest little blue light on it's front that I've ever seen in my life. BUT it works well; and it is stylish. I kept looking.
3) The Terk was a monster. It did not work well; and it looked like a rooftop antenna sitting in my living room. HORRIBLE.
4) The Phillips amplified antenna didn't perform well either ... not half as well as the GE Quantum.
5) Imagine my shock when I found that the Philips SDV2210/17 was the best of the bunch! Not only does it pick up every single station with the best signal of any of them, it is also the cheapest and requires no electricity. It has a low profile, so even though it does look like exactly what it is, it's not obtrusive at all. The price has gone up a little since I got mine earlier this week; but THIS IS THE BEST ... at least for me. Considering that it is half or less of some of the others, it's definitely worth a try.
